Have you ever opened your Bible, flipped around a bit and thought… “man, I don’t get this?” Ever heard one sermon and three days later watched a slightly different perspective on the same verse? Or how about this one, you read it one way and then someone shares their opinion and now you’re full of questions and confusion but seeking freedom?
In fact, it got so confusing for me that I flat out had a tantrum. Ok, it wasn’t quite that bad, but I did tell the Lord in prayer one day that I’d had enough and didn’t want to talk to Him anymore. In a sense, I crossed my arms and turned my back — huffing loudly. (Definitely not my most holy of moments).
Truthfully though, it all came down to one single word. This one word sprinkled throughout the scriptures nearly 1,000 times was the instigator in my all out Bible study melt down. It sounds crazy when I spell it out like that, but it’s true.
The word (or forms of the word) ‘commandment’ could topple my apple cart like nobodies business. It messed with my grace-side, twisting mercy, blessing and love into some reward. I just didn’t get it, and my frustration turned to anger. Which… when you are angry about something in the Bible or in relation to God you are more apt to ignore, stuff and deny it.
But here’s the cool part about the Holy Spirit. You can’t fool Him. He won’t let those things just sit to fester between you and Him, He loves you too much. So, he sent me Elizabeth Giertz and her amazing blog series called Word Nerd.
Oh yes, my friends. Oh yes. Let me tell you!!
But God did not just send a new friend nor a fun blog series… wait for it.
God signed me up for not just any word – but for this word. Command/Law. Yup. He sure did. Ha- I even tried signing up as the alternate hoping to avoid it down the last minute but God wouldn’t let it go.
So friends, can I share what I discovered with you? God’s word is true all the way through. It might mean you have to dig deep for the treasure, it might mean you have to press through what makes you uncomfortable, but there is ALWAYS a nugget of pure gold at the end, and it is always a ticket to more freedom.
Come, check it out! I’m excited to share the freedom I found in the law and commandments.
