There was another message in my inbox with a bright eyed blonde listing off all the reasons to follow her diet plan to loose weight and “be the healthiest you’ve ever been.” It was the second message in a week, not from the same friend- but from multiple. Of course I want results and of course I want a healthy body but I have had some pretty serious setbacks from dieting and have been caught up in faulty information before. So- I started googling.
I googled the “diet” itself. Then I added words like “benefits” or “risks”. Then I took key phrases from within those articles and searched for more articles. I searched medical journals and research findings. It all sounded great and it all sounded awful. All at the same time. No matter how I phrased the question, no matter what combination of words I plugged into the search bar- I came up with a different answer every time. Even tallying the positives over the negatives didn’t help me find a conclusion. No matter what was in the search bar there was a different answer, and thus, no answer at all.
I even went to the experts. My doctor shrugged with an undertone of “I don’t know” and offered a completely different plan all together. My health-professional friends shared their insights- still holding that tally in a completely even tie. I was standing at the crossroads with no idea which way would be best. I had equal reasons to follow the diet and equal reasons not to, I literally began to feel overwhelmed and panicked.
If public opinion waves with the wind and scientific research can change with every new discovery, what is the best decision? Which way do we go? What is truth?
In the utter frustration of my indecision, I called and complained to a dear friend. Her response was equal parts conviction and freedom. She said “If I go to the Bible about every other problem I face, why not go to it for food and dieting too?”
So I did. I looked up verses she had mentioned and searched out others. As I read them a peace washed over me. Reading Google made me feel like a step child stuck in the middle of feuding parents, but the Word made me breathe deep, oxygenated breaths. The Word gave me a solid unmovable, unchanging place to stand- regardless of what the research of scientists say.
The Bible is more than a collection of historical stories pertaining to a long lost people group. It is more than a list of does and don’ts. It is far more than just a book. It is a place, a place to meet with the Prince of Peace and hear His thoughts on things. What blows my mind every time is that this same collection of 66 books has been around for centuries, and yet it still applies to my post-modern, digital-era, fast-paced life.
The words held within it’s cover are a steady diet of truth, hope and love. A diet I forever want to consume.
And friends, let me just take a moment and encourage you too. The Word of God was written just for you, just for your specific situation. His word does apply to your life, you only have to step up to the table and receive. If you’ve ever struggled to hear His voice through the Bible, ever wondered if you could find answers to the questions you’re asking–I encourage you to try these things:
First, Grab your Bible and read the book of John. It’s as if Jesus were sitting right with you over coffee, telling you His story. It’s a great place to start. Then, ask God where to go next. A funny thing will happen- you’ll have a “random thought” and I double-dare you to follow it.
If you want a little extra encouragement in taking steps to meeting God in His Bible, my friend and I wrote a Bible study just for you. It’s on sale NOW!! So click on the picture below and dive right in!
